Why does Slack go down?

Slack outages most often look like messages not delivering, the app stuck on "Reconnecting...", or notifications not firing — total outages of the workspace itself are rarer.

Common issues

WebSocket gateway issues, where the app loads but new messages never arrive until you refresh.
File upload and download failures while messaging continues to work.
Search index lag after large message bursts, where recent messages are missing from search results.
Notifications not firing on mobile while the desktop app receives messages normally.
Workspace admin / SSO issues that affect login but not already-authenticated sessions.

What you can try

If messages don't deliver but the UI loads, force quit and reopen — gateway reconnects often need a fresh connection.
Cmd/Ctrl+R (reload Slack) is the right first move; the app does not always reconnect cleanly on its own.
